A New Dawn for Sundance

Dear Friends,
Sundance by Design
Winter is coming….AND the Garden Center is coming!

As part of this new consolidation, Sundance by Design will be expanding into the space formerly occupied by Alpine Blue Home, makers of beetle kill furniture and accessories. We will miss our wonderful neighbors Doug and Amy who are not going out of business and can still be reached through their website: alpinebluehome.com.
We look forward to seeing you and sharing the details of this great new phase. We are redesigning and evolving to serve you better!

Linda’s Garden Center Tip
September is a busy month for gardeners. What, with all the sales going on at garden centers…surely another perennial can be “shoehorned” in somewhere!
It’s a gross misconception that you should not plant after the first frost. Late summer and fall are great times to plant even if we have more frosts. Plants are concentrating on root development, so give them a little help by drenching the soil around them with kelp. Kelp is full of micronutrients, so it not only improves the soil, but helps the roots better take in the nutrients from the soil.
It is also a good time to start tidying up the garden. Dead heading and cleaning up diseased leaves and disposing them seems like a lot of work, but think of it as more of a work-out. A 150 lb. person can burn 200-300 calories an hour just weeding! Getting fresh air, Colorado sunshine, and keeping the body flexible are extra perks.
Grass seed can be spread now, but wait to sow wildflower seed until the ground is frozen and no chance of germination can occur. Purchase seed now, and then right before a big snowstorm put it down, knowing the souls of those seeds will bloom next year at just the right time.
Bulbs will be arriving at the garden center mid-September. Planting bulbs is always an exciting time. The hard work it takes to plant them pays off ten fold in the spring when we are all craving for color in our gardens again. Sundance carries mostly deer/elk resistant bulbs, such as daffodils, alliums, snowdrops, chiondoxa, & iris. Always add bulb food to the bottom of the hole to ensure healthy roots and big blooms. Don’t forget to pick up some paperwhites to force indoors for the holidays.
Yep – September is a busy month.
